Considerations when selecting a Handheld Mobile Computer

November 9, 2024 admin Comments Off

Handheld mobile computers, or commonly known as ”PDA Scanners’ are deployed commonly in retail, logistics and manufacturing. Compared to a consumer mobile phone, these devices are rugged and comes with integrated scanners, designed to handle industrial and field workersā€™ needs. Comtrol Solutions specializes in handhand mobile computers and provides some key points for your consideration:

#1: Operating System and Security

You will find many brands of handheld mobile computers in the market at very competitive prices with little differentiation to the hardware specifications. One key differentiator to look out for is whether the manufacturer/brand provides regular security patches or Android Updates. For example, TC22/TC27 or TC53/TC58 series may be delivered with Android 13 today but provides regular security updates and supports upgrade to Android 16, Enterprise users will find security a strong justification for a productā€™s price premium. HIK Vision’s new MDT202 is released with the latest Android 14 and Google Mobile Service. Like most other brands, HIK Vision’s MDT202 does not allow upgrade or downgrade of the Operating system. GMS is a must if you wish to install and utilize Google Play Store or the entire range of apps and services provided by Google.

#2: Durability – IP rating and MIL approval

Rugged handheld mobile computers are more durable than a mobile phone since they are designed for industrial or outdoor use. The typical operating temperature a rugged tablet may be between -20Ā°C to 50Ā°C. Moving a device in and out of a freezer environment may expose it to damages caused by condensation. Comtrol Solutions is not aware of any handheld mobile computers designed for cold-chain operations.

As such devices are usually exposed to dust water (or even rain), look out for the Ingress protecting (IP Rating) of the tablet. Most rugged tablets are rated IP65 and higher.Ā The first digit ā€˜6ā€™ represents a dust-right device while the 2nd digit ā€˜5ā€™ represents protection against water jets. For a device to have protection against temporary immersion in water, it would have to be rated as IP67. For more information on ingress protection, refer to this link.

To understand how rugged a tablet is, look at the MIL Approval. This approval means the device has been tested to the same grade as US military equipment, with drop tests from certain height and taking a number of tumbles. All Zebra TC series handheld computersĀ feature MIL-STD-810 approvals, withstanding drops starting from 1.2m height, without any additional 3rd party protectors.Ā

#3 Workflow Accessories – Hot Swap Battery, Straps, Docking Stations

The Zebra Zebra TC53 and TC58 model for example boasts a huge range of accessories, such 5-slot charge cradle, single-slot charge cradle, battery chargers, headsets for PPT, wrist mounts, trigger hands, workstation and vehicle cradles.

When your device has to be used for multi-shifts or long hours, consider finding models with hot-swap batteries or auxiliary batteries to ensure continuous operations without the need to shut down or finding a charger for the device. This is another feature that consumer phones lack, as their batteries are usually not field-replaceable.

Many warehouses require devices to be mounted on forklifts. For such use cases, this is an additionally long-term investment as you not only have to consider how durable the rugged device is when subjected to vehicle vibrations, but the cost of cradles to be installed on the forklift. Gamber Johnson, Proclip and RAM MOUNTS and some brands with quality cradle which allows charge and power handheld mobile computers when used on forklifts. Consult Comtrol Solutions for the supply and installation of Proclip cradles in Singapore.

#4: Specifications: Processor, screen, ports

Consumer tablets are typically used for a variety of purposes, including video streaming and gaming. Consumers may consider factors like large display screen, storage, speaker quality or elegance of design. Rugged handheld computersĀ however, are designed for different needs.

Qualcomm is the common processer for Android handheld computers.Ā  If your application is web-based and running on a browser, 4GB RAM is typically sufficient though you may consider 6GB or 8GB ram if multiple applications have to run at the same time.

Screen size is an important consideration for operator efficiency. Test out the UI of the application running on the tablet to find out if the screen size is sufficient to display the required information or it will impact operation efficiency. If a bigger screen is required, consider a 8 inch tablet instead as most handhand mobile computers have an estimated screen size of 6 inches.

#5 Environmental Considerations

Some operators operate in hazardous areas containing volatile chemicals. In these scenarios, you need IECEx or ATEX approved tablets. At Comtrol Solutions, we carry an extensive range of these gadgets, including the BARTEC TC26ex-NIĀ (ATEX Zone 2/22 approved), the Bartec SCex1 Smart Scannner (ATEX Zone 0/1/21) or theĀ  the Bartec SPex1 Smartphone (ATEX Zone 0/1/21)

If your device is used outdoors, besides considering the waterproofing (IP protection) of the tablet, consider if the screen supports ‘wet mode’.Ā  Also look at whether the screen is bright enough for viewing if it is used under sunlight Nits refer toĀ candela per square meter. Brightness of 800 nits is usually the minimum preference for the display to be ‘sunlight readable’.

#6: Return on investment

Mentioned in #1, a device which can support future operating systems means that future apps may be supported and your tablet may be usable for many many years. Ā It may be tempting for companies to purchase low-cost commercial devices since they generally cost less than rugged devices. However, they may spend more on repairs and replacements in the long run. The downtime and disruption to operations can be even more costly, as mobile devices become an integral part of businesses. Zebra has the Zebra OneCareā„¢ plan which provides accidental damage protection, an attractive option for customers operating in harsh environment and subject to abusive operational use.

#7: Conclusion

Using the following framework, consider the essentials vs the ā€˜good to haveā€™.

Do you require a device running on Windows or Android?Ā

Do you require your device to support just Wi-Fi, or does the operator require internet access outside the 4-walls?Ā

Refer to the drop specifications of the device. How rugged should the device be?

Do you need an integrated scanner? Do you need to capture barcodes from long-range or standard-range?

What hardware specifications do you require? Most customers run web-based applications via a browser or app so 4GB Ram and 32GB Flash memory is often more than sufficient.

How big should the display screen be and what resolution is required? Consider the application that is running on the device; if you have an application that requires a large screen, a rugged tablet is the best option.

Do operators prefer working with a touch-screen, or do they require a keypad?
